3 Problems Winter can Cause for Your Shoes

You've put together the perfect outfit to wear on a chilly winter day -- all you're missing is the perfect pair of shoes. You want to wear something that can withstand the harsh winter elements without sacrificing sophisticated style. You've considered wearing your favorite pair of winter boots, but feel they're too clunky for your outfit.

A pair of black pumps in your closet crosses your mind. "Can I pull these off in this weather?" you ask yourself. The thought slipping on a sheet of ice and hitting the ground makes you cringe a bit -- and with good reason. Here are three problems to keep in mind.

The Pain of Confronting the Harsh Winter Elements

Dr. Emily Splichal, podiatrist and human movement specialist, believes you have a lot to worry about when combining black pumps and the winter season. In fact, she believes you shouldn't wear them at all. Here's why. "When you're in heels, there's a shift in your sense of gravity. Your balance is already off, so if there's ice or snow, you could slip and really hurt yourself. Walking on ice is hard enough as it is with flats, it becomes harder in heels," she says.

But it's not just about snow and ice; it's also about road salt. Salt causes two other major problems with black pumps. One problem is staining, which mars the look of your shoes.

The other problem is road salt's drying effect, which is terrible for leather. It causes the leather to split and crack -- not a pretty sight! Fortunately, ways around all of these issues exist.

How to Tackle Wear and Tear on Your Favorite Pumps

Wearing your favorite pair of black pumps without encountering the aforementioned problems is possible. Wear them when you know you're going to places where the roads and sidewalks are cleared of snow and ice. But before you slip them on and head out, think about where you're going and check the weather forecast.

Unfortunately, you may find that salt stains are difficult to avoid. If your shoes become stained, utilize a simple technique involving white vinegar. Start by diluting a small amount of it, such as a tablespoon or two, with an equal amount of water. Use a soft cloth, such as an old t-shirt or sock, to apply the diluted white vinegar to your shoes. Vigorously rub away the stains without saturating your shoes with too much liquid.
